The Best Foundation is a nonprofit international organization that was established in Israel on March 6th 2005. Best Disease, also called Vitelliform Macular Dystrophy is a genetic disease that causes blindness by destroying the macula in the center of the retina.
This genetic disease is autosomal dominant and therefore passes from one generation to another.
So far there is no effective treatment for this disease.
The goals of the Best foundation are to
- To promote and fund research projects aimed to better understand the disease and to find a cure for Best Disease.
- To organize conferences regarding the disease.
- To provide information on the latest developments.
- To support children affected with the disease.
Children are born with perfect vision, and can be diagnosed as being affected with Best Disease between 3 to 15.
Gradually, they can become blind.
About 14 000 american and 300 israeli children have been diagnosed as suffering from this disease. These children and many others in the world share this condition. They appeal for scientists, ophthalmologists and genetics to find a cure so they can continue to see the beauty of the world around them.
On the Board of the Best Disease Foundation are some well-known Israeli scientists, public officials, psychologists and philanthropists.
