Prognosis

In many people serious sight loss is avoided but others can lose sight which may approach levels which would qualify for registration as partially sighted.

Overall, the visual prognosis in Best disease is relatively good, with most patients retaining reading vision into the fifth decade of life or beyond. Family members who carry a mutation in the VMD2 gene and who have minimal macular abnormality in early adult life, usually retain near normal visual acuity long term.
